Why adults get acne, and what actually clears it

Adult acne is common and treatable, though it behaves differently from the teenage version. It tends to be more hormonal, more stubborn, and less responsive to whatever is on the drugstore shelf. What drives it

The mechanism is the same as it ever was: oil, clogged pores, bacteria, inflammation. The triggers are what change.

Why drugstore products stall out

Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and adapalene are decent ingredients. They work within their limits, and for mild occasional breakouts they are often enough.

Persistent adult acne tends to sit outside those limits. Deep cystic lesions that take weeks to resolve are not going to be handled by a wash. Hormonal acne in particular needs treatment aimed at the hormonal driver, not the surface result.

Prescription options change the picture. Topical retinoids, oral antibiotics, spironolactone for hormonally driven cases, and isotretinoin for severe or scarring acne all work at a level nothing over the counter reaches. Which combination fits depends on your skin, your health history, and what is actually causing the breakouts.

What waiting costs

Patients often say they wish they had come in sooner. Acne feels like something you should be able to handle alone, and seeing a doctor for it can feel excessive. It is not.
